Digital Photography Software - Going Digital

What digital photography software should YOU use? What tools will you use to edit your photographic images? Read on to find out...

Digital photography software is a recent photo-based tool that allows you to utilize digital technology to make and create images on a wide variety of subjects. Digital photography has numerous advantages over photographic film - with digital the images can be displayed, printed, transmitted, manipulated and archived using digital and computer techniques. No 'film' required!

What Is The Digital Advantage?

The thing with digital cameras and digital photography software is that you suddenly have convenience at your fingertips! With digital cameras you use a memory card that allows you to store more pictures without the effort of physically changing films. Don't like a shot? Delete it. Digital makes things a LOT easier! You can edit your photos online at the drop of hat too.

Another advantage is that in many ways you save more, pay less, and don't have to buy film. You also don't need to wait for the guy at the Fast-Photos shop to develop your photos! You can see how attractive the whole digital approach is, right? Of course, this doesn't mean you need to stop shooting those terrific color slide films though!

So, with tools at your fingertips such as making mini movies with your camera, adjusting your photos depending on your preferences (red eye reduction and macro effects, etc) or cropping pictures to one another, one can't help but being seduced by all the digital photography software tools at our disposal. As a whole, it's probably better to use digital technology rather than stick with photographic film. (Purists will no doubt disagree!)

Digital Photography Software For Editing

The most common software for editing photos is probably Adobe Photoshop. This software is the King of the Photo Editing Jungle. It allows you (once you've 'mastered' it!) to really bring out the best of your digital images and transform them to anything you can imagine. OK, so Adobe Photoshop has a substantial price tag. Nevertheless, once you've become familiar with it, you'll wonder how you could ever live without it!

Adobe Photoshop CS4 and CS4 Extended are the current versions of Photoshop. Expect a new, even better version to be out next year. You can also use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 to import, manage and perfect an image. In a nutshell, if you are creating images for the web, brochures or design, graphics and illustrations, or even editing your stock photos, then you need (and should be using) Photoshop.

If you're new to editing digital photos and want to start things off easy, then basic digital photography software is perhaps best for you. This is software that has standard image editing features allowing you to perform basic photo editing tasks such as rotating, sharpening and cropping (etc).

The top five (5) beginner photo editing software for Windows (and Mac too I hope!) include Adobe Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Digital Image Suite, Ulead PhotoImpact, Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Roxio Photosuite.

These software tools have basic but solid image editing features like red-eye removal, noise removal (heavily pixelated images) and other cool photo enhancement options. Plus these tools will cost you a LOT less than Photoshop, and allow you to start creating and editing photos asap!

There are other free photo editors for Windows (and Mac too!) that can be used to edit your favorite images. The top five (5) free photo editors are the fabulous GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), Google's Picasa, VCW (VicMan's Photo Editor), ImageForge, and Paint.net. Using these photo editors will allow you to become familiar with editing digital images, stay creative, and hopefully satisfy your photo manipulation needs!
